Your Fall Wardrobe, Sorted: A Louisville Girl's Guide to the Season
There's a specific feeling that hits Louisville in September — still warm enough for iced coffee on the porch, but the light's already changing, and suddenly all you want to wear is a great sweater. Fall is our favorite season to dress for at Rodeo Drive, and we've pulled together how we'd build a wardrobe for it, piece by piece.
The Five Pieces Worth Investing In This Fall
1. A Statement Sweater Not just any sweater — one with a little personality. A fringed knit, a shawl collar, or a funnel neck instantly elevates jeans or a skirt without any extra effort. This is the piece you'll reach for on repeat from October through February.
2. A Great Coat Louisville weather can't make up its mind in the fall, so a versatile outerwear piece matters more here than almost anywhere else. Look for something with real texture — a leopard print or foiled suede jacket reads polished over jeans and dramatic over a simple dress.
3. Wide-Leg or Straight Denim Skinny jeans have had their decade. This fall it's all about a wide-leg or straight silhouette, ideally in a rich stretch denim that actually holds its shape through a full day.
4. A Jacket That Does Double Duty A cape-style or cropped jacket works over a sweater for daytime and over a dress for a dinner out — one piece, two completely different outfits.
5. Boots You Actually Want to Wear This is the one place we'd tell you not to compromise on comfort. A well-made bootie earns its keep if you're on your feet at the office, at the Highlands Farmers Market, or out for a fall football weekend.
How to Transition Your Closet Without Buying a Whole New Wardrobe
The easiest fall refresh isn't a full closet overhaul — it's layering. Take your warm-weather dresses and add tights and a sweater underneath a jacket. Take your summer denim and add a chunky knit and boots. A handful of new pieces, mixed into what you already own, does most of the work.
Fall Color Palette to Know
This season leans into rich, warm neutrals — camel, chocolate, burgundy — alongside deep jewel tones like emerald and sapphire for evening. If you only add one new color to your closet this fall, make it a deep burgundy; it works from daytime meetings to Derby-city dinner reservations.
